Are you looking to purchase a home, and you're deciding if you should live in a gated community? These types of communities are a bit different from having a single-family home outside of a gated community since there are a few advantages and disadvantages of living in one.

Security 

A huge advantage of a gated community is the security. No matter how a gated community is run, with an automatic entry system or a person manning the gate, it is going to keep people out that shouldn't be there. This helps deal with crime since people can't just enter and exit the community whenever they like. It can also stop people from just showing up at your door, such as unwanted guests and solicitors. If they do come, you'll get a heads-up and can choose to invite them in.

Cost

Living in a gated community is not free. If there is a gate, there is some portion of society that is being blocked off because it's on private property. This means that the community is responsible for the roads, routine maintenance, street lights, and things of that nature. If it is a gated community with a person that operates the gate, then there is a cost for their wages as well. This is why you are going to see homeowners association (HOA) fees associated with living in a gated community. It's definitely something to work into your budget when you decide to look into a home within a gated community. 

Insurance

Being in a gated community can actually save you money. Having a gate around your home gives you more security, which your insurance provider is going to like. You'll likely see reduced rates on your home insurance because of this. This can help if you are buying a second home that you do not live in most of the year, and being vacant makes it more of a target for crime. 

Restrictions

Being in a homeowners association means that there are going to be some restrictions on what you can and cannot do on your property. You may be limited to what type of fence you have, what paint colors you use, and even what you have in your backyard. Some people are fine with this because it increases the value of the community as a whole and leads to high resale values. However, others don't like the restrictions if it prevents them from doing something they really want to do.
